Callum’s entry into machining and engineering started when he completed his Certificate II in Engineering Studies course at Chisholm Institute of TAFE. Then, in his Certificate III Engineering-Mechanical studies, he consistently shone as the top student. He was a natural, with precision workmanship and a passion for engineering.
He had doubts when he started his apprenticeship with STEG Engineering. Was he good enough? Could he improve? He kept trying his best and, thanks to the support of his coworkers and teachers, excelled at his course.
Out of curiosity, he would solve engineering problems by creating his own processes. He always discussed problems he discovered with his lecturers, his workplace and fellow classmates, and created real-life, practical solutions.
Unsurprisingly, Callum is already back in the classroom - he’s now enrolled in Chisholm’s Certificate IV in Engineering - CNC Programming, further demonstrating his eagerness to keep learning.
His advice to students considering a trade is simple – “See what’s out there!”
“See where you can go, see what you can do, the world is your oyster. If you put your mind to it, you can do anything,” he says.
Wise words from the man who won the Bronze Medal in the 2023 National WorldSkills Championships for Turning. He was also named Apprentice of the Year in the 2024 Chisholm Education Awards.
