Mary-Louise did not mean to enrol in the mechanical engineering (Certificate II in Engineering Studies) at Chisholm Institute of TAFE; she thought she was enrolling in a civil engineering course. Despite this unexpected twist, she committed to the course and became one of the best students in her mechanical engineering class. While she could have been deterred, she embraced the situation positively, optimistic for what she could learn. Throughout her studies, it has been Mary-Louise's ability to turn potential setbacks into an opportunity for growth that set her apart.
“I learned systems engineering at school, so wanted to try more hands-on engineering,” said Mary-Louise.
“If I start something, I want to do my best; so, I thought ‘why not give this other course a try’?”
Committed to her local community, Mary-Louise has been a member of the 2nd Mornington Sea Scouts for 12 years, participating in hikes and camps with the Cubs. Her involvement in fundraising events for the Sea Scouts highlights her dedication to making a positive impact locally. She has also represented Sea Scouts at ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day marches.
She also serves a Dreamcatcher mentor, encouraging a Year 7 student to aspire to their dreams, demonstrating her commitment to fostering positive change.
Mary-Louise's positivity and resilience in overcoming challenges have positively impacted her peers. By navigating obstacles with grace and optimism, she has become a source of inspiration for others facing their own challenges. She was a finalist for the Secondary Student of the Year Award at the 2024 Chisholm Education Awards, and her ultimate goal is to study mechatronics at university.
