Given his life experience, Corey was determined to succeed in the Graduate Certificate in Family Violence at Chisholm Institute of TAFE. His ability to relate to other people's experiences helped him become a valuable contributor to his course, to his work and volunteer roles.
His motivation to enrol in the course was deeply personal. He’d experienced emotional abuse in a past relationship. Rather than be stuck in his past, he turned adversity into empowerment. Through his profession, he supports others to escape violent relationships, and thrive.
In the classroom, Corey went out of his way to create a supportive and inclusive learning environment. He willingly shared his difficult life experiences and, by doing so, created a safe space for other students to share theirs too. By being vulnerable, Corey created real friendships among classmates, and a culture of understanding and empathy.
While studying, Corey worked in the family services sector. He has also been a dedicated volunteer at Lord Somers and PowerHouse Camps for the past six years, contributing hundreds of hours to supporting students to develop leadership skills.
His goal is to work full-time with family and domestic violence victim-survivors now that he is qualified as a family violence practitioner.
A dedicated, compassionate, and resilient individual, Corey has translated personal experiences into a powerful force for positive change.
Congratulations to Corey for being selected as a finalist in the Higher Education Student of the Year (Domestic) category in the 2024 Chisholm Education Awards.
