Lisa Wilbraham set a goal; to complete her Diploma of Nursing in 2023. She smashed it, with high grades and a great attitude.
The Diploma of Nursing, a Free TAFE course, gave Lisa practical work placements in many areas of nursing. Practical work placements really helped her to decide the direction to take her nursing career.
Lisa enjoyed the challenge of learning through the tough stuff and making the most of every opportunity. When she was on an acute placement, she was the only student willing to spend time in a palliative care unit. She said this real-life experience helped her to understand the importance of caring for people at end of life.
Chisholm’s teachers understand that life can be tough. Lisa had two young children to care for, and her teachers were hugely supportive when she became overwhelmed, at times, with all her responsibilities.
In her spare time, Lisa has been able to put her nursing skills to immediate use. She’s the volunteer first aid officer for her son’s footy team, and during state football competitions.
Lisa was selected as a finalist in the Koorie Student of the Year category in the 2024 Chisholm Education Awards. During her work placements she worked hard and as a result, was offered several jobs before she’d completed her studies. She’s now really enjoying her work at Bunurong Health Service in Dandenong and plans to continue to study toward a Bachelor of Nursing.
