If you work in the heavy commercial vehicle mechanical technology industry and want to gain a formal qualification in the field, this course is for you.
During the course, you'll learn about workplace safety and equipment and gain hands on experience servicing everything from batteries, transmissions, engine and drive assemblies to hydraulic, steering and braking systems.
This is an accredited apprenticeship course, which involves a competency-based assessment program that can be undertaken in the workplace, at Chisholm, or a combination of both.
When you successfully complete this course, you’ll have the confidence to work on a broad range of heavy road transport components.
This nationally recognised qualification may lead to employment in roles such as automotive motor mechanic and heavy commercial vehicle repair technician.

Inherent requirementsPHYSICAL:
Language, literacy and numeracy
You will:
• be on your feet for periods of time
• use hand tools and power tools
• be exposed to noisy environments
• be reasonably fit as some lifting may be required
• have good eyesight and hearing as students will have to visually inspect vehicles and listen for unusual noises.You are required to complete a language, literacy and numeracy skills test before course commencement. This will determine course suitability and if you may need additional support.
We use an approved online skills review tool to determine your language, literacy and numeracy skills within the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF).

Practical placement
There are no practical placement requirements for this course.

Simulated work environment
The automotive workshop is considered a real work environment with personal protective equipment (PPE) required at all times.
PPE consists of:
• long work pants
• long sleeve work shirt
• steel capped work boots
• safety glasses (will be provided).
Requirements for the automotive workshop sessions:
• Approved PPE/work wear is required when in the workshop
• long hair must be tied up. Nails must be kept short, no acrylic nails.
• Jewellery/Piercings – kept to a minimum.
• Personal hygiene – showering and wearing of deodorant is expected.
• Student attire must not breach any anti-discrimination legislation. -

Chisholm courses are subject to minimum and maximum group numbers. Courses may be cancelled or postponed if minimum numbers are not achieved by the start date of the course. Courses may close prior to the start date if the maximum numbers are reached. In that situation, eligible applicants will be offered a place in the next available intake.
