From passion to gold: Izayah's journey in barbering and success in the 2024 Worldskills Competition.
Izayah is a passionate Chisholm student, currently studying the Certificate III in Barbering after completing his Certificate III in Hairdressing. He recently won a gold award in the Hair & Beauty WorldSkills Competition 2024, earning him a spot to attend the state competition in February 2025.
Izayah has a strong enthusiasm for cutting and is always focused on improving his techniques. Through competitions like the WorldSkills Competition, Izayah sees this as a valuable opportunity to learn and grow. The experience motivates him to push his limits, helping him perform at his best and continually improve his skills.
He found that hairdressing is the ideal career for him due to his passion for creativity and connecting with people. He is particularly drawn to cutting techniques such as layering, texture, and precision cutting. However, communication initially posed a challenge for him, as he used to feel nervous about conversing with clients and managing conversations.
Through his studies at Chisholm, he gained the confidence to interact with people / clients more comfortably. The supportive, close-knit environment within Chisholm’s hairdressing and barbering courses has helped him build upon these skills, working alongside peers and teachers who guide his development. The learning environment in the first class Mysa salon at Frankston campus also inspires students to perform at their best.
Looking to the future, Izayah hopes to run his own salon. He is inspired by the real-world salon environment at Chisholm, where students have opportunity to work directly with clients to gain hands-on experience. “The teachers are dedicated to student success, offering one-on-one support to help every student master essential skill,” he said.
With his increasing confidence and determination, Izayah is on track to achieve his dreams.
