Breaking barriers and pursuing a passion: Liara Murray’s path to a beauty career

Liara Murray has always thrived in a hands-on environment. During Year 12, she completed a Certificate III in Beauty Services (SHB30121) and soon discovered a love for the industry. This passion has become the driving force behind her new career.

Occasionally, Liara had challenges at school due to hearing difficulties, but she never let them hold her back.

"I struggled a little bit in school because of my hearing, but it wasn't something I worried about because it was a part of my identity," says Liara. "I recognise now it's one of the reasons I've always loved hands-on tasks, like sports, practical work at school, and have my passion for beauty."

Liara decided to continue her pathway to a beauty career by studying for a Diploma in Beauty Therapy (SHB50121) at Chisholm. She enjoyed her experience and credits her amazing instructors with much of her success.

"My teachers were instrumental in helping me develop my abilities, push myself, and always give my best effort. They constantly encouraged and assisted me at every step of the process, helping me reach my goals."

While gaining her qualifications, Liara was able to practice in the student-run Mysa Salon and Spa. The on-campus clinic allows students to provide services to paying clients, build their skills and confidence and prepare for the workforce.

"I had the opportunity to run the salon reception. I took appointments and greeted and checked out clients, which helped me gain experience," she says.

During her course, Liara especially enjoyed a visit and information session her class received from the Peninsula Hot Springs. So much so that she now works there as a spa hostess.

"I’ve gained so much experience in my spa hostess role at the Peninsula Hot Springs," she says.

Working in beauty suits Liara's outgoing and creative nature. Every day is unique, and with each appointment, she gets to meet new people and provide different services.

"I have been so surprised by the innovation of beauty. You can always learn new things even after entering the industry. There's always new treatments, new products and more knowledge to gain."

Liara is excited about her future and wants to keep working to refine her skills. One day, she'd like to be her own boss and maybe open a salon. She also loves travel and has been lucky enough to see a lot of the world already.

"I definitely see myself travelling more over the years, whether for a holiday or to work," she says.

Liara's advice to anyone wanting to start a Diploma of Beauty is simple: go in with an open mind.

"Before starting the course, I felt as though I was already making plans for what I wanted to accomplish or what units I would and wouldn't like. But I was surprised that I showed strengths where I didn't expect them and liked units or treatments that hadn't even crossed my mind."
